This PowerPoint begins with a description of a biome and a reference that the type of biome is determined by rainfall and temperature. A series of slides show biomes around the Earth and general geographic trends according to latitude. A really well done biome pyramid unfolds step by step accompanied by a picture that shows how the amount of rainfall and relative temperature create various biomes. (Example - high temp and high rainfall = Tropical Rainforest) Reference to how altitude (temp and rainfall) can also change the types of vegetation present. A step by step process shows the different vegetative zones that one would encounter climbing a large mountain from its base to the summit. More global trends are described and the students contribute to the learning again in a series of challenge questions. The marine biome is discussed as it makes up most of the Earth. Students then sketch a 8 x 5 grid of boxes in their notebook and conduct research on different biomes recording rainfall, temperature, types of plants, types of animals. Another educational activity follows where the class is broken up into table groups. Each group gets to choose from a scenario presented in the PowerPoint. The scenarios are traveling across the grassland on a wagon during the pioneer days, trying to survive while being lost in the desert, dog sledding across the Artic Tundra, group discovers Big Foot while hiking in the boreal forest, group on safari in East Africa traveling through the savanna, the final skit is looking for Inca artifacts in the tropical rainforest. A 1-20 visual PowerPoint quiz is then provided to conclude the PowerPoint. Students see a picture a biome and need to record the correct name of that biome. The exciting part is that each picture is a scene from a popular movie. The answers are provided after the quiz. The question is previewed before the answer is revealed so the teacher can call upon students. A hidden box game is the final challenge in this PowerPoint where boxes that are covering up a picture are removed slowly. The students take turns guessing the picture beneath. This is a really fun and educational PowerPoint about Biomes. The quiz at the end is worth every cent. The skit activity is one my favorites all year. Everything you need to run an amazing week of learning is provided.
