5th Grade NGSS Science Curriculum

This curriculum includes 4 full units of study (One Full School Year) that cover the 5th Grade Next Generation Science Standards. This Curriculum includes slideshow road maps that delivers a truly interactive science experience. Students follow the slideshow with a printed or digital work bundle that chronologically follows daily lessons. As the teacher advances through the slideshow, students fill-in critical class notes (red colored slides), answer questions, complete diagrams, take built-in quizzes, and much more. Exciting activities are spread throughout, and visuals in the slideshow and work bundle make the entire activity run smoothly. Lesson planning becomes staying ahead of the class with a simple materials list. Activities use materials that are usually available in your home/school or easily gathered from a local store. The slideshows and work bundle are designed to work together, and keeps the learning organized. Students quickly learn how the lessons run and fall into a productive routine. Besides the meaningful activities, units have built-in quizzes, review games / assessments, amazing video links, step by step diagrams, graphing exercises, fun projects, answer keys, crosswords, flashcards, find the Owl, rubrics, self-reflection, and much more. Everything you will ever need to run an amazing year of science is included. The entire curriculum arrives in editable .doc or pptx. and updated every year on TpT. This curriculum contains 119 lessons of about 50 minutes (with projects that take additional time), and over 200 pages of corresponding work bundle. The layout of slides, highly visual mode of learning, color coding of text, one step at a time approach, and a constant built-in review keeps the students focused and motivated to excel. The students even find the end of the Part Assessment / Review Game a ton of fun. The corresponding visuals between the slideshow and work bundle allow the student to know exactly where they need to be. It's a low stress, but highly organized learning experience for everyone, and one that will engage your brightest, and struggling students alike. Every lesson and work bundle can easily be converted to a Google slideshow or Google .doc for remote learning or a student run learning experience. 5th Grade NGSS Curriculum

Part 1 is broken into two Parts, Part 1A and Part 1B. The first Part explores matter, atoms, the size of atoms, Law Conservation of Matter, open and closed systems, chemical change, chemical reactions. This Part includes 9 Lessons of 50 Minutes and has a follow along 12 pages of work bundle. There’s plenty of hands on activities and exciting teacher demonstrations that use easy to find materials.  Part 1 B examines matter properties and has 16 Lessons and 22 page work bundle. Students learn about physical properties, learn how to measure mass and volume and then calculate density. Students learn about solutions and then design their own brand of soda in a collaborate project. Amazing hands-on lessons then explore other properties of matter. The unit concludes with some fantastic graphing exercising and student favorite review games.

5PS1-1 Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles that are very small and can’t be seen.

5PS1-2 Measure and graph quantities to show evidence that the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.

5PS1-3 Make observations and record measurements to identify materials based on their properties.

5PS1-4 Conduct an investigation with the mixing of two or more substances that will results in new substances.

3.5ETS1-3 Create a fair test with variables that are controlled.

5th Grade NGSS Matter, Energy, Organism and the Environment

Part 2 has 3 Parts and Explores Matter, Energy, Organisms and the Environment. Part 2A, 8 Lessons and 12 Page Work Bundle. This part examines energy in the environment, food chains, and trophic feeding levels. Students are also introduced to the big concepts in eco literacy that will appear throughout all of part 2. They’re opportunities for the students to get outside and participate in some fun simulations. Part 2B (9 Lessons and 12 Page Work Bundle) investigates phytoplankton, zooplankton, aquatic food chains, predator prey cycles, food webs, how plants use air and water to do photosynthesis, hydroponics, and more. Part 3C has 4 Lessons, with an 8 page work bundle and explores animal dentition, bio-mass pyramids, and has some great wrap-up and review opportunities.

5.PS3-1 Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.

5.LS1-1 Describe that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.

5.LS2-1 Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Air, water, decomposed materials in soil is changed by plants into matter that is food.

5.ESS2-1 Show with examples ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.

5th Grade NGSS Science Earths Systems Lessons

Part 3 has 3 Parts and explores Earth’s Systems. Part 3A has 7 Lessons and a 15 Page Work Bundle. This part includes a major Earth’s Sphere Project that will likely take many additional days. Students learn about how matter and energy cycle through earth’s various spheres. Part 3B explores Water on Earth and has 9 Lessons that chronologically follow a 21 Page Work Bundle. This part examines the available of freshwater on earth, ways to conserve water, groundwater, groundwater depletion and groundwater contamination.  Part 3C explores how Human’s interact with water as has 12 Lessons with 28 pages of Work Bundle. This part explores flooding, levees, wetlands, hydroelectric dams, impacts of dams, and salmon. There’s plenty of daily activities, but also includes a major project where students role play a local town’s person in a fictious village that is discussing whether or not to flood a local waterway. Students write a persuasive speech and dress up in character for the town meeting. Always a lot of fun.

5.ESS2-2 Show and graph the amounts and percentages of available water and where it is distributed on earth.

5.ESS3-1 Research and discuss in a group about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.

5.ESS2-1 Create a model using examples to describe ways the life spheres: geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.

5th Grade NGSS Science Earths Place in the Universe Lessons

Part 4 has 4 Parts and explores Space Systems. Part 4A has 6 Lessons and 18 Page Work Bundle. This is an introduction to Astronomy, explores planetary motion, planetary distances, with plenty of graphing and amazing visuals. Part 4B covers the Sun and Stars and has 11 lessons and 17 Page Work Bundle. This portion examines the Hertzsprung-Russel Diagram, Inside the Sun, Solar Flares, CME’s, and Life Cycles of Stars. Part 4C explores the Earth, Moon, and Inner Planetary Topics. This part has 15 Lessons and 19 Page Work Bundle. This part goes into details of Mercury and Venus, and the relationship of the earth and moon, axial tilt, seasons, phases of the moon, tides, and explores the surface of Mars. Part 4D is the final part of the curriculum and explores Gravity with a  Rocketry Unit. This Part has 12 Lessons and 24 Page Work Bundle. Students design and build water rockets that can be launched (Teacher needs to purchase or build their own launcher -They’re not that expensive). Lessons also cover the Apollo missions to the moon, the space shuttle, ISS, gravity, space-time, speed of light, and all three of Newtons Laws of Motion.

5.EES1-1 Describe the differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from the Earth.

5.EES1-2 Create a graph that displays patterns of daily changes in the length and the direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of stars in the sky.

3.5ETS1-1 Create a design problem reflecting a need that includes special criteria for success and include materials, time, or cost.

3.5ETS1-2 Create and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem. Base these on how well each is likely to meet certain criteria of the problem.

3.5ETS1-3 Create a fair test with variables that are controlled. Include some failure points and identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

5.PS2-1 Describe that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on an object is directed downward
