This PowerPoint begins describing what wind is in a series of slides that only present one piece of information at a time. Every slide is accompanied by a visual. (Wind is the movement from high to low pressure, caused by temperature variations, differences in temp over the land and seas, topographical changes.) Students then are taken through a step by step drawing that has them create a globe. Petri-dishes, a compass, or old cd's are encouraged to trace the circle. Lines in the notebook will help. Students are then given a word bank of the various global winds. The PowerPoint then presents the global winds with visuals and students place the correct term into their sketch at the correct location. A series of challenge based questions have the students put their notes to work. The activity questions repeat several times so all can participate. An activity has the students spin a paper plate or circular piece of cardboard / pie plate and another student tries to draw a straight line from the center to the outside of the spinning the plate. The students learn that the line curves and the next set of slides discuss the Coriolis Force. A review of high and low pressure and winds leads into land and sea breeze slides. Each slide is step by step here showing both of the land and sea breeze in detail. Mountain winds are then described with visuals and this leads into Wind Chill. Wind Chill is covered in detail. Students determine wind chill looking at a wind speed vs. temperature grid. Some really gross images of frozen fingers and toes are shown. An activity has students wet their hand, as well as use hand sanitizer (alcohol) to feel the effects of evaporation from the skin. Flight is then covered quickly as well as Bernoulli's principle. A build a paper airplane contest is described with rules etc after having learned how a wing works. A hidden box game reveals a Sea Breeze as students takes guesses as each slide revels more of the picture.
