Lesson 1 - 50 Minutes. Water on Earth. In this lesson students get introduced to the work bundle that follows the entire unit. They fill-in red slide notes, and answer questions. This first lesson examines the ways humans use water. Students brainstorm some ways we use water and then narrow that larger list into six broader uses. Red slide notes then show the six ways we use water. The water availability / water supply on earth is then shown and the teacher does a demonstration removing water from a 5 gallon jug to show how much of the earth's water is in the ocean, lakes, rivers, groundwater etc. Each supply is provided in a visual and then %. Students then create a pie graph in the work bundle.
Lesson 2 - 50 Minutes. Water the Resource. The slide begins polling the class with ways we use water everyday. Things take a dramatic shift when the questions shift toward drought and starvation. Students then learn about some the various and serious droughts that impacted cultures on this planet. Students then read about a War over a Well in Somalia where warlords controlled water usage. They then answer a serious of questions from the reading in their work bundle. Video link also provided.
Lesson 3 - 50 Minutes. Groundwater and Water Conservation. This lesson introduces groundwater and discusses the need for conservation and ways to conserve water at home. Aquifers are introduced. The slideshow includes critical notes, nice video link, and amazing visuals. Students complete the first few pages of the work bundle.
Lesson 4 - 50 Minutes. Groundwater Depletion. This lesson is about groundwater starts off with students learning about recharge and discharge of the aquifer. Students relate these terms as they balance a checkbook over a few months. Each slide either adds or removes some money from their account. After several months they are bankrupt but students learn how aquifers become depleted when more water is withdrawn than deposited. The negative impacts of groundwater depletion are addressed and the Tucson River in Arizona is case studied.
Lesson 5 - 50 Minutes. Groundwater. Students learn about groundwater depletion and graph data about groundwater in Cook County Georgia. Students then learn about the drying up of the Aral Sea. Neat video link and amazing visuals are provided.
Lesson 6 - 50 Minutes. Groundwater Contamination. Students learn about groundwater contamination and types of groundwater contamination. They then learn about the Love Canal Tragedy and do a reading with choice of questions. A video link is also provided.
Lesson 7 - 50 Minutes. Groundwater Contamination. Wrap and and continue with contamination. Students learn about fracking and some environmental problems associated. They then do and activity that has them color code a map with varying levels of groundwater contamination. They try and find the source of the pollution at the end.
Lesson 8 - Crossword Puzzle and Review Game. A crossword puzzle reviews important vocabulary. This crossword has 23 clues. A 20 question Review Game is provided that acts as an end of the unit assessment. The quiz is slideshow based but the students record answers in their work bundle. You can decide to run it or post it as a google slideshow.
Lesson 9 - Review Game Answers. The questions is provided before the answers are revealed so the teacher can call upon students. I usually have the students self-assess their own quiz game. For fun bonus questions, find the owl, and final wager are part of the experience. An answer version of the work bundle is provided which I'll also use for the students to self-assess.
The work bundle is 21 pages and follows the entire learning experience. I collect the work bundles at the end to use as an assessment of learning.
