This PowerPoint begins with a quick tour of infectious diseases from the past and the millions of people that have suffered as a result. Some step by step notes describe how infectious diseases are spread. Joseph Lister and his advancements are described. The immune system is introduced in a step by step process with unfolding visuals. The first line of defense (skin and mucous) are described with many exciting visuals. The 2nd line of defense is described and connections to the military / war zone in the body begins. This creates a stunning presentation but also relates aspects of the immune system to that of roles in modern warfare. The inflammatory response is described with some brief attention to Anaphylaxis. The 3rd line of defense describes the battle within, starting with interleukins, Leukocytes: White blood cells (made in bone marrow), Phagocytes, Lymphocytes: B Cells, T Cells, and antibodies. immunity and vaccines, A link to a great video about the flu (20 minutes) is provided as well as virus prevention and allergies. Vaccines are described with visuals and virus prevention tips. A series of hidden box games conclude this section of the PowerPoint where each slide removes some of the shapes uncovering the picture beneath. Students try to guess the picture.
