This PowerPoint begins asking students to guess how long humans have been a part of Geologic History. A clock then breaks down the existence of humans within a 12 hour geologic day. A clock moves from 12:00 and events pop-up as they occurred in order. Around 11:59 P.M. humans become a part of the day. The idea that Earth system history has physical, chemical, and biological components is discussed and each term addressed. Students get a kick of learning Uniformitarianism : The laws of nature have not changed over time. The principle of superposition is then discussed and a series of slides describe. An activity has the teacher stack up some books. Teacher places lower cards (A, 2, 3 etc at the bottom of the stack, and higher cards J, Q, K, near the top.) Students see how the fossils (cards) get more complicated as they are found in the layers closest to the surface. Earth's timeline is then addressed in a step by step fashion and students learn about Eons,Eras, Periods, and Epochs of Earth's history. Major extinction events are then described with visuals. Many references are made throughout the PowerPoint that 99.5% o f all species that ever existed have gone extinct. An activity is described with instructions and visuals that uses credit card / receipt paper to create a timeline. A long sheet paper could also work. The PowerPoint shows how to mark the paper every billion years, then every 500 million years, and then every 250 million years. A sheet (jpeg) is on the slideshow that should be printed up and given to the students. Major events and their time are provided. Students use this sheet to fill in the units of time, and events that occurred. The slideshow then covers major events of each unit of time one at a time so students can sketch pictures to their timeline. Many visuals are included. Important note about each unit of time is provided. An activity discusses the Burgess Shale and has the teacher pass out clay. Students then make impressions using shells to create their own Burgess Shale. A dinosaur CD challenge is provided that is really neat. Teacher passes out old cd's to each student. Two pictures are shown and the students need to guess the correct dinosaur. If they get it right they keep their cd for the next question. If they get it wrong they lose their cd. Answers are provided and the activity is very easy to conduct. Some video links to a dinosaur song, and walking with dinosaurs is provided. The K-T mass extinction event is referenced. Similarities of dinosaurs and modern day birds are described. The Cenozoic is described and ice age mammals presented. Some hidden box games conclude this PowerPoint where each slide reveals a hidden picture beneath. The students try to guess the pictures. This is a fantastic PowerPoint that my students really enjoy.
