This unit bundle includes 10 lessons of about 50 minutes, and 15 page work bundle that has students fill-in critical notes, conduct exciting hands-on activities, answer questions, interpret graphs, includes games, built-in quizzes and much more. The work bundle chronologically follows the detailed slideshow for an amazing learning experience. A 20 question quiz game concludes the learning for a great review and assessment. Everything arrives in editable format.
This PowerPoint begins describing the differences between rocks and minerals with a description of crystals. Students put their new found knowledge to work with a visual quiz that has them make hand signals to represent a rock or mineral or neither. This is kind of a play on rock paper scissors. Student need to make the correct symbol for each slide 1-10 and bonus. Uses of minerals are described with visuals in a step by step approach. The six types of crystals are shown and many animated slides are used. Students then need to demonstrate understanding by answering a series of challenge questions. Some actual minerals are added into the questioning. A cd 50/50 challenge game has students demonstrate answers with an old cd. Questions are presented and students must answer with the correct side of the cd. Directions are included and the students really enjoy this game. The two types of minerals are addressed (silicate vs. non silicate) and characteristics addressed. Flash cards are then provided and feel free to use your own mineral kits. The minerals on the flashcards are described below. Some slides help get the kids ready for a built-in quiz. The 1-20 quiz pulls images and text from the flashcards with some real images of the minerals. Answers are provided. Physical properties of minerals are then addressed in a step by step approach. A spreadsheet is provided for a lab and link to the lab. Students investigate Luster, Streak, hardness, cleavage and fracture, smell, specific gravity, solubility in water, and melting of ice. Built in directions and visuals make this a very easy lab to conduct. Please see the list of minerals suggested below. A final quiz is a great review of the entire lesson. A 140 PowerPoint review game and provided template helps review the entire lesson again. This is a stunning PowerPoint full of many activities that involve the students throughout.
Student use provided flashcards to help them study for a built-in quiz. Directions for the flashcards are provided. I spend some class time showing the students how master a few minerals and then how to add a new one to the group and continue the process.

This PowerPoint also has several built-in activities that have students look at slides before the quiz and identify the portions of the flashcards that are incorrect.
