All Lessons are roughly 50 Minutes - This is an extremely brief breakdown of the unit.
Lesson 1 -DNA Extraction, Students get to extract DNA from split peas. The slideshow describes with directions and visuals the instructions for extracting DNA from split peas. This is great lab that uses some basic household ingredients, a blender, and some strainers. Teacher can also run as demonstration with student volunteers. When the lab is over, students get to look at a stringy white substance which is almost entirely extracted DNA. Always a a neat start to the unit.
Lesson 2 Flow of Information - This lesson examines the flow of information, focuses on DNA to RNA to proteins. The visuals and step by step process breakdown the basics. Student follow along in the work bundle.
Lesson 3 DNA's Discovery. This lesson focuses on the discovery of DNA, Watson, Crick, Wilkins and Rosalind Franklins important contributions. Slides, A Reading with Questions, and video links are provided.
Lesson 4 DNA's Structure. Student learn about the structure of DNA, record some step by step diagrams of a DNA strand, learn about phosphate backbone, carbon sugar, and four nitrogen bases. This set's them up nicely for the next lesson where they build a DNA strand. The slides throughout this lesson are fun and engaging.
Lesson 5 Build DNA. Student's follows the slideshow to build DNA and RNA with Twizzlers, toothpicks, and gummy bears.
Lesson 6 DNA Replication. Students learn about DNA replication, important red slide notes, questions, visuals, and video links are provided.
Lesson 7 Inherited vs Acquired Traits. This lesson introduces students to inherited vs acquired. After slides describe the difference a visual tour has student's deciding if the slide represents one or the other. The tour is around raccoons, and by the end the student have a good grasp of the concept.
Lesson 8 Review Game and Crossword. A 20 question Review Game with Final Question and Bonus, and a Crossword Puzzle review the learning / assessment. Everythin you need to run a fantastic unit of study is provided.
