This PowerPoint begins with a journal entry / question to the students that asks them Why we Age?, A series of important notes about Mitosis unfold with some animated slides, emphasis is put on how an exact copy is made, The PowerPoint then describes chromosomes and challenges the students with a series of name the part of the chromosome slides, Interphase is then described in step by step notes that use a shade technique that allows teacher to control the pace of the lesson, Prophase Prometaphase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase follows, All phases are accompanied with visuals. Part 2 Explores Cancer
Areas of Focus within this PowerPoint: This PowerPoint begins asking students to describe their connection / someone they know who has had Cancer, Next, Cancer is explained with a red slide (notes) with visuals, A series of pictures of tumors and cancers, some at the cellular level are shown, A list with visuals describes ways to help students avoid cancer. A special focus is placed on skin cancers and describes methods to avoid UV exposure. Also included is the A,B,C,D,E's of moles and skin cancer and a series of which mole may be cancerous questions. Ways to avoid cancer that are described are...Don't smoke or chew, Avoid UV exposure, Exercise Daily, Eat Healthy, Don't drink excessive alcohol, avoid radiation exposure, unprotected sex (HPV, and get regular check-ups with your doctor. The PowerPoint then describes how the number one way to avoid cancer is to not smoke / chew. The PowerPoint then begins an informative journey into the health affects of smoking, deaths with statistics, and much more. A worksheet is provided that has students respond to various videos / ads that they see. They must reflect to the effectiveness of graphic, reality, humor, and emotional ads. This balances some writing, videos, and presentation well. A 1-20 name which of the ingredients in a cigarette you would put in your body (Arsenic, Lead, etc ) and a 1-10 choose which hairy tongue you would kiss from some smokers quiz are provided. Tumors, Neck Breathers, Oral Cancers, and many other topics including advertising is provided. This is a PowerPoint that is powerful and informative. I hold nothing back when it comes to trying to keep my students from picking up a cigarette. Please preview before showing your students as this PowerPoint does include some graphic images and students who have parents that smoke sometimes get emotional. The dangers associated with Meth is also graphic and should be previewed. Caution! This lesson is very graphic, emotional, and powerful. It has on occasion made some students very emotional about a family member who smokes. Please preview the lesson and video links entirely before showing your students. This lesson doesn't water down the effects of smoking in any way! Please delete any slides / video links that you are uncomfortable about showing.
Part 3 Meiosis
Part 3 begins describing the cells that undergo meiosis vs. mitosis, shows detailed pictures of the sperm and the egg, has a built in see who was paying attention questions with which cells undergo meiosis vs. mitosis, and then breaks down meiosis with step by step visuals, paying particular attention to crossing over and then reduction division, A step by step drawing of sexual reproduction unfolds that leads the students to believe that it will be very interesting until it jumps into the cellular level at just the right time. An activity is also built-into the slideshow that has the teacher minimize out of the slideshow. Students move pictures around (teacher controls movement from computer but students are upfront directing) to recreate meiosis. An activity with beads is described and an animation that helps the students recreate meiosis at their tables is provided. This is a neat PowerPoint that breaks down a difficult process into manageable steps. Video Links, review opportunities, embedded checks, and much more are spread throughout.
