Atoms Unit Part 3. Atomic Theory, Orbitals, Electrons
$19.99
This unit includes 8 lessons of about 50 minutes and 17 pages of printable work bundle. The work bundle chronologically follows the entire set of interactive slideshows (hundreds and hundreds of amazing slides). Students record fill-in notes on the red slides, answer questions, conduct hands-on activities, and take assessments all in the work bundle. The slideshows are engaging and interactive throughout. Everything arrives editable and can be uploaded to Google classroom.
This PowerPoint begins with a step by step approach to Daltons Atomic Theories, describes what an element is in detail, reviews atomic number, atomic mass, protons, neutrons, electrons. Students are then asked to create a mini periodic table of elements in their journal (set-up is included in slideshow) that will become a handy place to add information to later. A neat series of slides shows 3-D electron orbitals. Valence electrons are covered and a neat quiz 1-10 has students describe the number of valence electrons when given pictures of various atoms. Answers are provided after the quiz. Family groups and valence electrons are discussed as well as the rules for the number of electrons found in each energy level for the first 18 elements and then for the transition metals. A series of practice problems are given to the class about energy levels and the answers are always provided. A link to a neat atom builder website that has a free trial is provided. A really cool "Not Smartboard" activity is provided where the teacher minimizes out of the PowerPoint slideshow and helps students pretend to drag electrons into the correct energy levels. An activity is also provided with instructions that has the students create clay models of the SPONCH elements complete with quarks. Notes about the SPONCH elements are provided and students create electron orbital diagrams of each element in their journal / notebook. A challenge opportunity is then provided for the students to match the correct electron orbital to the correct element in SPONCH. The octet rule is covered again in greater detail and the students complete family groups / number of valence electrons. Students then learn about Lewis Dot structures and use whiteboards and wooden molecule sets if you have them with the PowerPoint to go step by step building molecules and seeing the answers. This process starts with easy molecules and builds up to hydrocarbons, alcohols, carbohydrates, proteins and much more. Challenge questions and review opportunities are scattered throughout. The PowerPoint concludes with a guess the mystery picture beneath the boxes as each slide uncovers more of the picture. This is really neat PowerPoint that is incredibly interactive and visual. See my other PowerPoints on the Atom or view the entire unit below which comes with assessments, unit notes, videos, review games, answer keys, rubrics, and much more.
This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be interactive as possible and ask many questions, provides built in review opportunities, explains directions to activities, and much more.
